Activities for When Skies Are Gray

Apr 7, 2017 by Comfort Keepers

When April showers begin, your loved ones can feel cooped up in their house and bored with nothing to do. With boredom comes agitation, restlessness, and moodiness. It is important to make sure you are keeping your loved ones busy, even on dreary days when they may just want to sleep all day.

Many seniors may feel unmotivated to do anything, especially when the days are dark and dreary. But these fun rainy day activities can help boost their mood and keep them active, mentally and physically.

  • Arts and Crafts: Have your loved ones bring out their inner creativity with arts and crafts. Whether it is as simple as coloring or more complex like building model cars, crafts can brighten their day.
  • Bake or Cook: Nothing warms up a dreary day like a freshly baked batch of cookies or a pot of homemade chicken noodle soup. Whatever the food is, cooking or baking can entertain anyone on a day stuck indoors.
  • Visit Museum or Art Gallery: If the weather hasn’t cleared up, or your loved one just wants to get out and about, suggest an art gallery or museum for them to visit. Not only will it be educational and fun, but it will also provide some physical activity.
  • Read: Nothing passes a rainy day quite like a good book. Reading can improve the memory and thinking skills of your loved one, and keep them entertained when they are stuck inside all day.
